Leonardo of Pisa, later known as Fibonacci, spent part of his youth in the city known as bougia. There, he learned Hindu-Arabic numerals and methods of calculation from the Maghrebi merchants and scholars around him.
He carried that knowledge into Liber Abaci, the book that helped introduce positional arithmetic to Europe. For an AI company working with algorithms, this is a meaningful historical connection.
